Mariah Carey was born on 27 March 1969 in Huntington, Long Island, New York. Her mother Patricia Hickey, an Irish-American is a former opera singer and a vocal coach and father, Alfred Roy Carey, an African-American/Venezuelan is an aeronautical engineer. Mariah's family suffered racial discrimination, hostility and sometimes violence in the society, which forced them to constantly move from place to place in New York area. The strained life had its toll on Mariah's parents who divorced when she was just 3 years old.
Mariah growing under the wings of her mother spent much of her time at home and having nothing to do little Mariah indulged in humming and singing. Noticing her power, vocal range and melismatic style her mother taught Mariah the basics in singing and groomed her into a melodious singer. Mariah Carey who grew up with music is very much influenced by the likes of Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Gladys Knight, Al Green and gospel singers, The Clark Sisters, Shirley Caesar and Edwin Hawkins.
