While studying at Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New York, Mariah had to flee her classes due to her busy schedules at local recording studios. Consequently Mariah was nicknamed 'Mirage' as she is hardly seen in classes due to her frequent absence.
Mariah Carey later married Tommy Mottola, the executive of Columbian Records on 5 June 1993. With him as the guiding spirit behind her, Mariah became a sort of a cult figure and produced a series of hit records that established her as highest selling singer. The Billboard magazine rated her as the most successful artist of the 90s in United States.
In 1997 Mariah was separated from Mottola, which eventually led to divorce on 5 March 1998. Mariah then, all alone took control of her music completely and started introducing hip-hop elements into her albums. This was not very well received by the music lovers and soon her popularity started gliding down. Columbia Records in 2001 and EMI's Virgin Records the following year abandoned her. Her semi-autobiographical film "Glitter" and the album with the same name have failed to lift her up again. Setback after setback including her father's death with cancer made her life miserable leading to a physical and emotional breakdown. She later regained her popularity during early 2000s.
