Mariah Carey carved her career under the guidance of Columbia Records Tommy Mottola. She first released her self-titled album "Mariah Carey" in June 1990. Within two months, the singles from the album 'Vision of Love,' 'Love Takes Time,' 'Someday' and 'I Don't Wanna Cry' reached # 1 position on Billboard charts making the album a multi-platinum seller and further won two Grammy Awards in the category of 'Best New Artist' and 'Best Female Vocalist'.
Working alongside with Walter Afanasieff and the dance group C&C Music Factory, Carey created her second album "Emotions" as a tribute to Motown soul music and released it in late 1991. 'The less interesting' album received lukewarm reception. While "Merry Christmas" became the most popular Christmas album of all time with its single, "All I Want for Christmas is You" becoming the biggest hit in Japan. Over the years it also emerged as the most popular song on North American radio.
